Carnival is Rio’s biggest event. It happens at the peak of the summer when “Cariocas” are at their best. Festivities attract hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world. Carnival is a 4-day celebration starting on Saturday and ending on Fat Tuesday. Carnival Sunday is seven weeks before Easter Sunday. Dates change every year. In 2023, it will happen from the 17 through 21 February. The Samba School Parade at Rio’s Sambadrome is something everyone must experience at least once in a lifetime. The first division takes place on Sunday and Monday, with 6 Samba Schools per night. They are magnificent and sumptuous, each one counting with approximately four thousand participants. It starts at 9:00 pm and goes until sunlight the next day, around 6-7 am. This samba marathon is also a fierce competition. Each year a school is downgraded from special to access group and vice-versa. The winners return on the following Saturday to perform the parade again.
